Know Before You Go

ORV License & Permit

A valid Michigan ORV license and trail permit is required to ride. This allows access to designated ORV trails, scramble areas, approved county and forest roads and the frozen surfaces of public waters.

Safety Certificate

ATV, ORV and UTV operators under the age of 16 must complete an approved ORV safety course and carry the certificate when riding on both public and private lands. When on the trails, young riders must always be under the supervision of an adult for their safety and the safety of others.

Free Weekends

Twice a year, in June and August, local and out-of-state visitors can ride more than 4,000 miles of ORV trails and routes, along with the state’s six scramble areas, without needing an ORV license or trail permit as part of Free ORV Weekends. All state ORV rules and laws still apply.
