Rapid River Relic Ride
A Gathering of Enthusiasts
The Rapid River Relic Ride, a cherished annual event in Delta County, Michigan, will celebrate its 18th year of showcasing vintage snowmobiling in the most "yooper" way. This unique gathering, which brings together snowmobile enthusiasts from across the country, is more than just a display of antique snowmobiles; it's a celebration of history, community, and shared passions.
A Two-Day Celebration of History & Fun
The Relic Ride is a two-day affair, featuring not just the relic ride itself, an event that takes place on the last Friday of January, but also a snowmobile swapmeet. On Saturday, Main Street in Rapid River closes for this exhibition, open to the public and free of charge, where you can spend the whole day admiring the full array of antique snowmobiles. This display not only serves as a showcase of history but also as an inspiration for younger generations to continue this Upper Peninsula tradition.
Last year, the event saw an impressive turnout with 280 snowmobile drivers converging on Rapid River. Among them was John McGuirk from Ohio, an avid snowmobile rider since 1972, who brought a 1980 Polaris snowmobile for the annual relic ride, plus three additional snowmobiles from the 1960s for the show. McGuirk's participation highlights the event's draw for long-time enthusiasts who find joy in the slower-paced, nostalgic experience of vintage snowmobiling.
More Than Just a Ride
For many, the Relic Ride is an opportunity to reunite with friends. Scott Nieuwenkamp, a member of the Rapid River Relic Riders, emphasizes the event's role in bringing people together - a chance for friends who share a love for snowmobiling to reconnect and create new memories. The event is also about fostering a sense of community and enjoyment, with participants registering through cash or non-perishable donations that benefit the local community.
The Rapid River Relic Riders, who have hosted this event over the decades years, has continually witnessed an increase in participation over the years, a sign of the event's growing popularity. As the event continues to grow there is a revived hope for the younger generation's involvement, ensuring the continuation of this beloved event.
Looking Forward to the Future
As the Annual Rapid River Relic Ride concludes, the anticipation for future events grows.
